RAV Friction Grade Calculator

The maximum grade for a road to be approved for inclusion in a Tandem or Tri Drive RAV Network is determined by using the calculator below. The calculator determines the maximum grade before a vehicle combination loses traction according to a given torque split for the drive axles.

Note that in some circumstances (particularly higher grades) other factors such as the vehicle engine power and gearbox may further limit the maximum grade for the particular vehicle.

Select from pre-defined vehicle category or "Customise" to provide specific Gross Combination Mass (GCM), drive axle load or friction values below.

Selecting "Use Grade" enables entering a target gradient and determining the minimum drive axle group load needed for the given GCM.

GCM between 5.0 and 500 t.
Friction between 0.4 and 1.0.
Axle group load between 10.0 and 27.0 t.
